Install SolarKnock on your phone
Open SolarKnock in your phone's browser, add it to your home screen, and turn on location and microphone access.
SolarKnock isn't downloaded from an app store. It runs in your phone's web browser at https://app.solarknock.com. Add it to your home screen and it opens full screen, like any other app.
Add it to your home screen
Android (Chrome)
- Open https://app.solarknock.com in Chrome and sign in.
- Tap the ⋮ menu at the top right.
- Tap Add to Home screen or Install app (the wording depends on your phone), then confirm.
- Open SolarKnock from the new icon on your home screen.
iPhone (Safari)
- Open https://app.solarknock.com in Safari and sign in.
- Tap the Share button (the square with an arrow).
- Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen, then Add.
- Open SolarKnock from the new icon on your home screen.
Note: On an iPhone, the home-screen app keeps its own sign-in, separate from Safari. If it asks you to sign in again after you add it, that's expected.
Keeping it up to date
There's nothing to update by hand. Each time you open SolarKnock it loads the newest version, and if a new version arrives while the app is open it may reload itself once. Because of this, SolarKnock needs a data connection when you open it.
If a screen looks out of date or stuck, close SolarKnock completely (swipe it away in your recent apps) and open it again.
Location and microphone
SolarKnock asks for two permissions the first time it needs them:
- Location puts you on the Map and lets the Auto tab log where you walk.
- Microphone is used only by the Auto tab, to record conversations at the door. Everything else works without it.
Tap Allow when your phone asks.
If you said no, or location is blocked
Android, home-screen app: open Settings → Apps → SolarKnock → Permissions and allow Location and Microphone. The setting in Chrome is separate from the one for the installed app, so change it here.
Android, in Chrome: tap the icon to the left of the web address, open Permissions, and allow Location and Microphone.
iPhone: open Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services, make sure Location Services is on, then tap Safari Websites and choose While Using the App. For the microphone, open Safari's settings and set Microphone to Ask or Allow.
Then close SolarKnock completely and open it again.
If you turned the microphone down on the Auto tab, you'll see Recording disabled — microphone permission needed. Tap Try again after allowing it; recording starts with your next session. See How AutoKnock works.
Tip: If the map says it couldn't get a GPS fix, move somewhere with a clearer view of the sky and try again.
