How AutoKnock works

AutoKnock logs your walk and records the doorstep, then proposes knocks, leads and appointments for you to review and submit.

AutoKnock lives on the Auto tab. While it runs, the app logs where you walk every 20 seconds and records the conversations at each door. The audio is uploaded in one-minute pieces, turned into text, and read by the app, which proposes knocks, leads, appointments and notes for each door. Nothing is written until you review the proposals and submit them: see Reviewing your AutoKnock day.

Start and stop

  1. Open the Auto tab. It opens on today.
  2. Tap Start AutoKnock. The first time, allow location and microphone access.
  3. Walk and knock as usual.
  4. When you're done, tap Stop AutoKnock, then Tap again to stop.

One tap starts both the walk log and the recording. Start AutoKnock only appears on today. While a session runs, a red ON AIR strip sits at the top of every other screen; tap it to jump back to the Auto tab.

Location is required. Without it you'll see "Location permission is required to log where you walk." The microphone isn't required: if you decline it, the day still runs as a walk log without audio, and the tab shows Recording disabled — microphone permission needed with a Try again button. If you allow it then, recording starts with your next session.

While you walk

While you're recording, the tab shows the consent notice "Recording — conversations are captured; consent is obtained at each door" beside a line such as Last minute saved 10:42 AM. The At this door card shows the address you're at, with three buttons: Estimate opens the door's usual popup on its Estimate tab, Address fixes the address if the GPS picked the wrong house, and Note pins a quick note to the door.

Keep the screen on and SolarKnock open. If the screen turns off or you switch apps, your phone can pause the app, and both the walk log and the recording stop until you come back. See Getting the best results from AutoKnock.

No signal

Audio waiting to upload is kept on your phone, encrypted, and sent when you're back online. It uploads while SolarKnock is open, so open the app once you have a signal. Pieces that can't be uploaded within seven days are dropped.

The ready-to-review email

After you stop, you get an email once every recording from that session has been processed, for example "AutoKnock — Mon Sep 14 is ready to review". Its link opens that day on the Auto tab. Each session sends its own email. You don't have to wait for it: doors show up for review as each part of a recording is processed.

One recording at a time

Only one phone can record for you at a time. If another phone of yours is still recording, this one won't start a second recording. It shows Recording on your other phone, "Recording on your other phone. Stop it there, or wait 10 minutes." and a Try again button. After the other phone has been silent for 10 minutes, you can record here.

If the audio stops

The app tells you when audio stops, and it never restarts recording by itself. You may see:

  • No audio saved for 4 min — keep the screen on and check the microphone
  • Recording stopped at 10:42 AM — 18 min without audio, with a Start recording button
  • Screen was off for 12 min — no audio was saved

Tap Start recording to begin recording again. Reopening the app restarts only the walk log, and until you tap the button the ON AIR strip reads ON AIR · NO AUDIO.
